Passkeys are now mainstream — identity platforms need to design beyond passwords

FIDO Alliance’s 2026 research says passkeys have reached billions of active uses and workforce deployment is approaching the mainstream. The next identity challenge is operational lifecycle, recovery, and access governance.

Passkeys are now mainstream — identity platforms need to design beyond passwords

Passkeys have crossed an important threshold. FIDO Alliance’s 2026 research estimates that five billion passkeys are now in active use, with 75% of surveyed consumers having enabled one on at least one account and 68% of surveyed organizations deploying, piloting, or rolling them out for employee authentication.

That changes the product baseline for identity systems. Passwordless sign-in is no longer only an advanced security feature; for many applications it is becoming an expected authentication path. Platforms such as Outborn Account and AppKit should therefore treat passkeys as part of the default identity architecture rather than an isolated authentication add-on.

The harder problem moves from sign-in to lifecycle. Organizations still need reliable account recovery, device replacement, workforce offboarding, session revocation, application-level permissions, and auditable administration. FIDO’s separate 2026 enterprise identity research highlights how confidence in access revocation can differ from operational reality, reinforcing the need to manage physical and digital identity as a lifecycle rather than a login screen.

For a multi-application ecosystem, the best design separates authenticators from authorization. A passkey can prove who is signing in, while application roles, organizations, environments, and resource permissions determine what that identity may do. This separation makes it easier to evolve authentication without rebuilding every product’s access model.

Recovery also deserves first-class UX. Strong authentication can still create weak outcomes when recovery relies on insecure fallback channels or leaves users stranded. Recovery paths should be explicit, risk-based, observable, and consistent across the ecosystem.

The product opportunity for Outborn is therefore larger than 'support passkeys.' It is to make modern authentication feel native across Account, AppKit, and every connected application while keeping administrative control, recovery, and access governance coherent behind the scenes.

Passkeys are a lifecycle feature, not just an authentication option

Widespread passkey adoption reduces reliance on remembered passwords, but deployments must handle migration, synced and device-bound credentials, platform variability, recovery and policy for high-risk changes. A feature count does not establish user success.

Detailed scenario

Ask new and existing users to enroll, sign in on another device, lose a device and recover. Ensure lower-assurance recovery cannot silently grant a stronger credential.
