Passkeys are becoming the default — small teams need passkey SSO, not more SMS MFA
On 1 September 2026 Microsoft Entra ID began rolling out passkeys as the default authentication experience, with Microsoft-provided SMS and voice MFA retiring on 1 February 2027. For founders, ops, and IT leads at 11–100 person organisations in Thailand and English-speaking APAC, the lesson is not “wait for enterprise IAM.” It is to treat passkey-backed organisation identity as the door to connected apps — before SMS MFA becomes an operational liability.

On 1 September 2026, Microsoft began rolling out passkeys as the default authentication experience in Microsoft Entra ID; Microsoft-provided SMS and voice MFA retire on 1 February 2027. For 11–100 person organisations in Thailand and APAC, the lesson is not to wait for enterprise IAM. Treat phishing-resistant organisation identity as the door to connected apps. ### Passkey SSO for small teams A strong pattern is one durable identity per person, passkeys at the account door, organisation membership as context, and application access as a separate decision. Inventory SMS/voice MFA and shared admin accounts, choose a phishing-resistant primary method, plan recovery for lost devices, and keep human identity separate from agent identity. Agents should not inherit long-lived human sessions; give them scoped identity and policy. ### What Outborn should make easier Outborn Account provides shared identity, organisation membership, and a passkey-protected entry point across Outborn and Obsi. AppKit consumes that identity after the organisation check; Governance records purpose, approval, and evidence; Agent Connect governs external signals and agent actions. Join the Outborn Account waitlist to build toward that organisation door.
Passkeys remove one phishing vector, not every account risk
A properly implemented passkey binds authentication to a relying-party origin, reducing credential phishing. Account takeover still remains possible through recovery, compromised sessions, delegated access or unsafe enrollment flows. Small teams need recovery governance as much as a new sign-in button.
Worked example
Register a passkey, change devices and attempt account recovery under a simulated stolen-email scenario. Check that support and recovery pathways cannot bypass normal assurance.
How the boundary operates
Conceptual illustration for research and implementation planning.
What an operator should verify
Measure recovery completion, unauthorized enrollment, session theft response and friction across supported authenticators.
Primary source: Official documentation. The scenario is illustrative, not a record of a completed deployment test.
