Agent observability is becoming a shared telemetry problem — OpenTelemetry is defining the language
OpenTelemetry’s GenAI conventions are making model calls, tool invocations, token usage, latency, and agent runs observable through a common telemetry model. For Outborn Agent Connect and AppKit, that creates a path to portable monitoring without binding every agent to one vendor’s tracing format.
AI agents are difficult to operate when teams can only see the final answer. One request can trigger multiple model calls, tool invocations, retries, retrieval steps and external API actions.
OpenTelemetry’s GenAI semantic conventions provide a common vocabulary for model identity, token usage, duration, finish reasons, tool activity and agent-level execution.
For Outborn Agent Connect, a trace should cross product and tool boundaries while AppKit exposes environment-level telemetry policies and Governance consumes selected events for audit and risk workflows.
A trace vocabulary is not a shared understanding of success
OpenTelemetry's generative-AI conventions can standardize spans for model and agent activity, but teams must still define task outcome semantics, privacy controls and joins to business systems. Raw prompts should not become universally visible just because they are useful for debugging.
Applied implementation case
Inspect a run with two model calls and a failed CRM update. Correlate request IDs and tool spans without exposing customer messages in metrics dashboards.

Conceptual illustration; a real implementation must be tested separately.
Evidence and limits
Track instrumented spans, trace completeness, retention, PII redaction and links to verified business results.
