The EU Digital Product Passport Registry is live — product data now needs durable identity, provenance and APIs

The European Commission launched the Digital Product Passport Registry and testing environment in July 2026. The architecture separates decentralized passport data from registry-level identifiers and metadata, making durable product identity, provenance and interoperable APIs a practical design concern for Obsi Asset, Carbon, Drive and Outborn Governance.

Minimal product passport object linking a physical item to structured lifecycle data and provenance nodes

The European Commission launched its Digital Product Passport Registry and testing environment on 20 July 2026, moving the Digital Product Passport toward operational infrastructure.

The architecture separates discovery from ownership: trusted identifiers and registry metadata can point to product information while authoritative data remains with responsible parties.

For Outborn, Obsi Asset can anchor durable product identity, Carbon can attach environmental information, Drive can preserve evidence, Governance can manage provenance and policy, and AppKit can expose reusable APIs.

The registry stores identifiers, not every product record

The European Commission made its Digital Product Passport Registry operational on 20 July 2026. The registry supports registration of identifiers and metadata, while product information remains distributed. Software vendors should separate the registry's role from the systems maintaining authoritative materials, repair and provenance data.

Applied implementation case

Trace a battery passport identifier from a manufacturer to its underlying technical and supplier records. Update a component declaration and verify the identifier continues to resolve correctly.

Evidence and limits

Validate unique identifiers, lineage, versioning, data-access boundaries and the product categories to which delegated requirements apply.
