Scope 2 carbon accounting is changing — software should be built for standards that evolve
GHG Protocol’s 2026 Scope 2 consultation and standards harmonization work show why carbon platforms need traceable methodology, versioned factors, and evidence-first workflows.
Carbon software is often treated as a calculator, but the underlying rules are not static. Standards, factors and reporting expectations evolve over time.
A result should therefore be reproducible: users should be able to see which activity data, emission factor, methodology version, organizational boundary and evidence produced a number.
For Scope 2 especially, versioned calculation logic, auditable metadata, evidence-first collection and interoperable structured data are safer than silently replacing historical assumptions.
Scope 2 calculations must survive standard changes
A result depends on activity data, the electricity accounting method, geographic and temporal boundaries, factor version and supporting instruments. When guidelines evolve, carbon software needs transparent recalculation rather than overwriting past reports.
Detailed scenario
Recalculate a site's purchased electricity emissions after correcting an emissions factor. Preserve both the original signed result and the restated number with explanations.

Explanatory conceptual flow. Test assumptions against the actual legal, product and technical environment.
Verification checkpoints
Verify units, location- versus market-based calculations where applicable, certificates, factors, organizational boundary and versioned methodology.
