Identity for AI agents is leaving the lab — startups need first-class agent identity, not shared API keys

On 24 August 2026, Agent SSO brought the open Cross App Access pattern into a mainstream SSO product: agents that speak the standard can register as first-class identities and receive short-lived, identity-governed tokens instead of stored credentials. For founders, ops, and IT leads at 11–100 person organisations in Thailand and English-speaking APAC, the lesson is practical — treat identity for AI agents as part of the organisation account for connected apps before static keys become the default failure mode.

On 24 August 2026, Agent SSO brought the open Cross App Access pattern into mainstream SSO products. AI agents that support the standard can register as first-class identities and receive short-lived, identity-governed tokens instead of stored credentials. For 11–100 person organisations, this is a warning against shared API keys, borrowed human sessions, and unnamed owners. Cross App Access / ID-JAG lets an identity provider mediate app-to-app and agent-to-app access while the resource app keeps local policy control. Every actor that writes to a system of record should have a named identity, a human owner, scoped access, and an audit trail. ### Practical checklist Inventory every writable agent and automation. Stop shared human sessions. Prefer short-lived, audience-restricted tokens and put organisation membership before app and agent access. Separate human identity from agent identity, define approval boundaries, and write a kill switch before the first customer demo. ### What Outborn should make easier Outborn Account provides verified identity and organisation membership across Outborn and Obsi. Agent Connect governs external agents, Governance supplies approval and evidence, and AppKit consumes organisation-scoped identity. Join the Outborn Account waitlist for people and agents under one membership model.

Agent identities should be distinct from human impersonation

An autonomous worker should have a durable identifier, accountable owner, bounded purpose and independently reviewable permissions. Passing a broad personal token into every tool call obscures which actions belong to a user versus a service process.

Worked example

Create two agents for the same employee: one may read opportunities and the other may update them only after approval. Verify audit logs distinguish both identities and their scopes.

How the boundary operates

Conceptual illustration for research and implementation planning.

What an operator should verify

Evaluate lifecycle events—creation, key rotation, delegation expiration, compromise and owner departure—rather than only initial OAuth connection success.

Primary source: Official documentation. The scenario is illustrative, not a record of a completed deployment test.
